Theatrical Outfit continues its season of conversation-starting plays with “Boy.” This time, conversations center on gender identity and love: of other people and of ourselves.

Based on a true story, the play introduces Adam Turner as an adult and unfolds with scenes from his childhood. Born male, a doctor convinces his parents to raise him as a girl after an accident, a choice that leaves Adam (raised as Samantha) in search of a truer self.

“[This play] is saying that inside you know who you are, no matter who you are,” said director Melissa Foulger. “And people can try to push you in a different direction, be it if you are transgender or intersex, but that ultimately you are the only person who knows who you are and you have to claim that.”

Foulger spoke with “City Lights” host Lois Reitzes about the play alongside actors Clifton Guterman and Tom Key. "Boy" opens Sept. 28 at Theatrical Outfit and runs through Oct. 15.
